China has expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the glacier explosion in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district.
In the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, a part of the Nandadevi glacier broke on Sunday, causing avalanches and flooding of the Alaknanda River. The flood swept the hydroelectric centers. The bodies of 11 people have been found so far while more than 200 people are feared to have died.
“We have noted that there was a massive flood in North India,” China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said on Monday.
“We would like to express our condolences to the victims and bereaved families and the injured. We hope that the missing people will be rescued soon,” he added.
The sudden floods in the Ganga and Alaknanda rivers have caused widespread devastation in the high altitude areas of Uttarakhand.
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat on Monday quoted ISRO scientists as saying that the disaster in Chamoli district on Sunday came due to millions of metric tons of snow slipping together.
After a meeting with the Indian Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) officials and ISRO scientists on the reasons for the sudden floods in the Rishiganga and Dhauliganga rivers, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said that the snow that had fallen in the mountains of Uttarakhand three days ago was prompted millions of metric tons of snow to slide together which resulted in this disaster.
