    Around 170 students from an ashram school were admitted to the hospital due to food poisoning in Jat Taluka, Sangli district, Maharashtra, on Sunday. According to officials, the students’ health is currently in a stable state. An official mentioned that students from Samata Ashram School in Umdi experienced symptoms like vomiting, nausea, and diarrhea. It has been experienced shortly after having dinner served by the ashram staff on Sunday evening.

    The students were soon rushed to the nearby rural first aid center at Madgyal. However, the condition of some of the students worsened after which they were admitted to Sangli and Miraje government hospitals for treatment, an official said. More than 50 children were admitted to government hospitals in Miraj and Sangli as their condition worsened.

    Sangli School Incident: Over 200 Children Affected, Investigation Underway

    Currently, the condition of all the children is said to be stable. An official said that more than 200 students are studying in Samata Ashram School in Umdi. This includes boys and girls from 5 years to 15 years. While preliminary investigation into the matter suggests food poisoning as the cause of the illness, the concerned Collector has ordered an inquiry to ascertain the actual cause.

    An official said that the district administration has taken serious note of this matter. The Collector has given instructions to the Social Welfare Department to investigate the exact cause of the poisoning and submit a report within 24 hours. Pertinently, a similar incident of food poisoning had come to light in Sangli district in January this year.

    It is worth noting that approximately 40 students from Wanlesswadi High School had to be hospitalized. It is due to suspected food poisoning in the same district.
