    Javier Milei

Javier Milei, an outsider with far-right libertarian views, secured victory in Argentina’s presidential run-off, provisional results show. He defeated the governing Peronists’ candidate by over 10 points, with around 56% of the vote from nearly 90% of counted ballots. The election took place amid Argentina’s economic crisis and escalating inflation, according to the BBC.

Milei’s rival, Argentina’s economy minister Sergio Massa, congratulated him on his victory. “Obviously, the results are not what we expected.

I have contacted Javier Milei to congratulate him,” Massa said, as quoted by the BBC. “From tomorrow, the responsibility of providing certainty belongs to Milei.”

Former US President Donald Trump congratulated and extended his best wishes to Javier Milei on his victory, expressing a sentiment to “Make Argentina Great Again!” Milei’s proposals, such as dismantling the central bank, garnered support from voters seeking change, according to the BBC. His suggestion of adopting the US dollar as Argentina’s official currency was well-received by his supporters, although many economists warn of potential financial catastrophe.
