Manipur A killing spree, 3 missing villagers found dead

In the foothills of Bishnupur district in Manipur, a grim discovery unfolded as three individuals, a 50-year-old man, his 20-year-old son, and another villager, were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head. The tragedy occurred a day after the victims, along with a fourth villager, went missing while collecting firewood in a forested area adjoining Churachandpur. Disturbingly, one of the deceased had also suffered a slit throat, as reported by the police.

In response to the incident, a joint team comprising the Army and police initiated a search for the fourth missing person, continuing their efforts into the evening. Adding to the complexity of the situation, an unidentified armed group released a video on Wednesday, claiming responsibility for the abduction and subsequent killing of all four villagers.

Army Chief Raises Alarms Over Manipur Amid Indo-Myanmar Border Tensions

Army chief Gen Manoj Pande expressed concern about the situation near the Indo-Myanmar border, characterizing it as troubling. He pointed out that some insurgent groups, facing pressure in the frontier region of Myanmar, were attempting to enter Manipur. Gen Pande highlighted that approximately 416 Myanmarese soldiers had crossed into India due to the ongoing conflict between Myanmar’s armed ethnic groups and government forces. This, coupled with the situation in Manipur, was closely monitored by the Indian authorities.

In the backdrop of the Army chief’s comments, it was mentioned that anti-junta groups had reportedly seized control of key towns and military bases along Myanmar’s border with India. The volatile conditions had prompted numerous Myanmar citizens to seek refuge in Mizoram.

Switching focus to a different region, Gen Pande provided an update on the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh. He described it as “stable” yet “sensitive,” emphasizing that Indian troops were in a state of high preparedness to address any potential challenges. Despite the completion of disengagement in certain areas following extensive diplomatic and military talks, the standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh persisted for over three years.
