President Muizzu Addresses Parliament Amidst Criticism
President Mohamed Muizzu of the Maldives, who has faced disapproval for his stance against India, spoke in the parliament today during its inaugural session of the year. Mihaaru newspaper reported that the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and The Democrats, the key opposition parties, have chosen to refrain from participating in the presidential statement.

Constitutional Mandate: Annual Presidential Address
As per The Maldives’ Constitution, it is mandatory for the President to deliver an annual speech to the parliament during its initial session, presenting an overview of the nation’s status and offering recommendations for addressing various situations. President Muizzu’s address occurs amidst ongoing criticism of his anti-India position, a stance highlighted during his presidential campaign, which emphasized diminishing Indian influence in The Maldives’ affairs. Shortly after assuming office, he visited China and held discussions with President Xi Jinping.

The External Affairs Ministry has said the two countries “agreed on a set of mutually workable solutions to enable continued operation of Indian aviation platforms” that provide humanitarian services to the Maldives, Reuters reported.
President Muizzu’s anti-India stance has drawn criticism at home. The MDP and The Democrats recently issued a joint statement, describing the shift in the island nation’s foreign policy as “extremely detrimental”.
