The Lok Sabha elections of 2024 have seen intense exchanges between Congress leader Jairam Ramesh and Union Minister Smriti Irani regarding the performance of the Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) over the past decade. Ramesh accused the ministry of “massive failures” during this period, while Irani vehemently defended the BJP government’s record.

In response to Ramesh’s allegations, Irani criticized him as a “courtier” of the Gandhis and accused him of distorting facts to undermine the BJP’s efforts for women’s welfare. She countered his claims by highlighting various initiatives undertaken by the Modi government, such as the establishment of the NIRBHAYA Fund and the implementation of projects aimed at empowering women and combating crimes against them.

Irani emphasized the significant increase in funding for women and girls under the BJP government, as well as the enhancement of benefits and support for Anganwadi workers. She also pointed out the rise in female labor force participation and the empowerment of women through schemes like MUDRA loans and Stand-Up India.

In contrast, Ramesh listed alleged failures of the WCD ministry, including a rise in crimes against women and children, budget cuts, mistreatment of frontline workers, and health issues among women and children.

With the Lok Sabha elections approaching, these exchanges reflect the intense political debate surrounding women’s welfare and the contrasting narratives presented by the Congress and BJP. The elections are scheduled to be held in seven phases starting April 19, with vote counting on June 4.
