Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress chief, has written to President Droupadi Murmu, urging a reversal of the government’s decision to “privatize” Sainik schools, labeling it as a clear attempt to politicize these institutions. Referring to an investigative report based on an RTI reply, Kharge highlighted that 62 percent of the privatized Sainik schools are associated with BJP leaders and the RSS.

However, the Ministry of Defence has refuted these claims, stating that the selection process is impartial and that any political affiliation does not influence it. Kharge expressed concern that this move undermines the tradition of keeping Armed Forces away from partisan politics. It could potentially impact the national character of Sainik Schools.

The political or ideological affiliation or otherwise of the applicant institution does not influence the selection process. Attempts to politicize or distort the objectives and implementation of the scheme by casting aspersions on it. They are unwarranted and misleading,” the ministry said.
