    Heavy rain and storms have disrupted life in Assam, killing a student and injuring 12 others. A tree fell on the auto-rickshaw carrying the student in Dighalbori, Morigaon district, resulting in his death. In another incident, a tree fell on a school bus in Sonitpur district, injuring 12 children.

    Strong winds uprooted trees in several locations across the state, including Guwahati. Fallen electric poles disrupted power supply in lower Assam, and various towns experienced water-logging, officials reported. Authorities closed schools in the affected districts and halted ferry services in Guwahati, Jorhat, Tezpur, Morigaon, Dhubri, Goalpara, South Salmara, Barpeta, Cachar, and Karimganj due to the adverse weather.

    High alert in Assam due to heavy rain and storms

    The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has advised people to avoid staying in vulnerable structures and water-logged areas, to stock up on essential items, and to contact authorities in case of an emergency. Amid the storms and relentless rain, State Disaster Response Force teams, along with police and forest department officials, are actively engaged in relief and rescue operations.

    Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma urged citizens to stay indoors unless there is an emergency. “Heavy storms are hitting parts of the state and will likely continue. I have directed officials to remain alert and respond to emergencies promptly,” he posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

    Several districts in Assam are on high alert following a forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall after Cyclone Remal made landfall in neighboring West Bengal on Sunday.
