New Mexico: Wildfires kill 2, destroy 1,400 buildings

Wildfires in southern New Mexico have resulted in the deaths of two individuals, destroyed over 1,400 homes and other structures, and forced approximately 8,000 residents to evacuate from the mountain resort community of Ruidoso.

Two Victims Found in Burned-Out Car in New Mexico

New Mexico State Police reported on Wednesday that the skeletal remains of an unidentified person were discovered in the driver’s seat of a burned-out car. Another victim, identified as 60-year-old Patrick Pearson, was also found.

New Mexico Wildfires Prompt Major Disaster Declaration Request

Relatively small blazes are burning about 135 miles southeast of Albuquerque, the state’s largest city, in an area that has experienced several wildfires, including one in 2022 that killed two people. On Wednesday, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham requested a major disaster declaration from President Joe Biden for the South Fork and Salt fires, which have scorched over 23,000 acres (9,308 hectares) to the north and south of Ruidoso.

New Mexico’s Persistent Drought Fuels Destructive Wildfires

New Mexico is enduring a nearly three-decade-long drought, which has intensified the destructiveness and speed of wildfires. In 2022, the state experienced the largest blaze in the continental United States, which burned over 341,000 acres (138,000 hectares).
