In Nepal, the aftermath of recent floods and landslides has resulted in a devastating toll, with 224 confirmed fatalities and damages amounting to over 17 billion Nepali Rupees (approximately $127 million). Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal reported that the natural disasters have also left 158 individuals injured, while 24 people remain unaccounted for. In response to the crisis, the government has mobilized 30,700 security personnel to carry out search and rescue operations across the affected regions, as stated by the Xinhua news agency.
During a press conference, Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli addressed the situation, confirming that the search and rescue operations are expected to conclude within two days. He reported that over 4,000 victims have been successfully rescued from the disaster-stricken areas. The Prime Minister acknowledged the government’s failure to anticipate the scale of destruction caused by the relentless monsoon rains that struck on Friday and Saturday, which intensified the already challenging conditions.

In light of the tragedy, the government has declared a three-day national mourning period, which commenced on Tuesday. During this time, national flags have been lowered to half-mast to honor the lives lost in this calamity. The collective grief felt by the nation underscores the need for continued support and recovery efforts as Nepal begins to assess the full extent of the damage and move forward in rebuilding affected communities.
