Noel Tata was appointed Chairman of Tata Trusts on October 11, following the passing of his half-brother, Ratan Tata, on October 9 at the age of 86. The decision was made during a meeting in Mumbai and received unanimous approval from the Tata Trusts board. Tata Trusts, which controls a 66% stake in Tata Sons, the parent company of the vast Tata Group, holds significant influence over the group’s governance.

Noel Tata, 67, has been a trustee of both the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust, which collectively hold the majority stake in Tata Sons. His long-standing involvement with the Tata Group and his roles within these trusts positioned him as the leading candidate for the chairmanship following Ratan Tata’s passing. The Parsi community, historically closely linked to the Tata Group, supported the selection of someone with the Tata surname, making Noel Tata the unanimous choice.

Who is Noel ?
Noel Tata has been a key figure within the Tata Group for over 40 years. He is currently on the boards of several Tata Group companies, including Tata International Limited, Voltas, and Tata Investment Corporation. He also serves as the Vice Chairman of Tata Steel and Titan Company Limited. His leadership at Trent, the Tata Group’s retail arm, is particularly noteworthy. As Managing Director of Trent for over 11 years, Noel Tata oversaw the company’s impressive growth, transforming Trent into a Rs 2.8 lakh crore retail giant.
