    Taipei reported on Wednesday that it had detected a Chinese aircraft carrier group heading toward the waters between Taiwan and China, just a day after Beijing conducted a live-fire exercise near the self-governing island.

    China views Taiwan as part of its territory and has intensified military activities. In the region to pressure Taipei into recognizing its sovereignty claims.

    The Liaoning aircraft carrier group was spotted overnight near the Taipei-controlled Pratas Islands, located approximately 400 kilometers (250 miles) southwest of Taiwan. And is moving north toward the sensitive Taiwan Strait.

    Taiwan’s defense ministry announced on social media platform X that Chinese navy vessels, led by the Liaoning. Navigated through waters near the Dongsha Islands and continued their northward course toward the Taiwan Strait.

    Taiwan’s Military Monitoring Situation and Responding Appropriately

    The ministry stated that Taiwan’s military is closely monitoring the situation and responding appropriately. Last week, Taipei and its major ally, Washington, condemned the Liaoning’s participation in extensive military drills around Taiwan. In a show of force, China sent an unprecedented number of fighter jets and warships to surround Taiwan. Framing it as a “stern warning” to those advocating for Taiwan’s independence.

    This military activity was followed by China’s announcement of a live-fire exercise on Tuesday, taking place about 105 kilometers from Taiwan.

    Additionally, over the weekend, a US and a Canadian warship transited through the 180-kilometer Taiwan Strait, a part of routine passages by Washington and its allies to assert that it remains an international waterway. Beijing criticized this passage, claiming it disrupts “peace and stability” in the strait.
