Devendra Fadnavis, the Legislature Party Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was sworn in as the 21st Chief Minister of Maharashtra on the evening of Thursday, December 5, 2024. The grand ceremony, held at Azad Maidan in Mumbai, was witnessed by thousands of supporters.
Eknath Shinde, leader of a breakaway faction of Shiv Sena and the outgoing Chief Minister, was sworn in as Deputy Chief Minister. Alongside him, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Ajit Pawar also took the oath as part of the new government.
Chief Minister Fadnavis pledged to provide a stable government for the next five years, promising governance focused on transformation rather than retaliation. Deputy Chief Minister Shinde assured his full cooperation with Fadnavis, emphasizing teamwork to drive the state’s progress.
The swearing-in ceremony, held nearly two weeks after the Assembly election results were announced on November 23, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of various states, and a massive gathering of BJP-led Mahayuti supporters at Azad Maidan.

Devendra Fadnavis: Early Life, Education, and Political Journey
Born on July 22, 1970, into a middle-class family in Nagpur, Devendra Fadnavis has had a remarkable journey in politics. Academically accomplished, he holds a graduate degree in law, a postgraduate degree in business management, and a diploma in project management from D.S.E. Berlin. His political career began at the age of 22 when he was elected as a corporator in the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. By 1997, at the age of 27, he became the youngest Mayor of Nagpur. Fadnavis won his first assembly election in 1999 and has since been re-elected six consecutive times. He served as Maharashtra’s Chief Minister from 2014 to 2019, becoming the state’s second-youngest CM after Sharad Pawar. He also led BJP campaigns for the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra and later held roles as Leader of the Opposition (2019-2022) and Deputy Chief Minister (2022-2024).
