Mumbai attack mastermind Abdul Rehman Makki dies in Pakistan

Abdul Rehman Makki had been unwell for several days and was receiving treatment for high blood sugar at a private hospital in Lahore. He passed away on Friday following a heart attack.

Hafiz Abdul Rahman Makki, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) deputy chief and mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks passed away in Pakistan on Friday, December 27, after suffering a heart attack, sources confirmed to India Today TV.

Makki had been unwell for several days and was receiving treatment for high blood sugar at a private hospital in Lahore.

Makki Arrest and Legal Actions

In May 2019, the Pakistani government arrested Makki and placed him under house arrest in Lahore. In 2020, a Pakistani court convicted him on charges of terror financing and sentenced him to life imprisonment. January 2023, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) also designated him a “global terrorist.”

Makki played a role in financing the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, which resulted in the deaths of 166 people. Counter-terror operations killed nine terrorists, while security forces captured Amir Ajmal Kasab alive.

In addition to his involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks, Indian security agencies wanted Makki for his role in the Red Fort attack. On December 22, 2000, six Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists stormed the Red Fort and opened fire on the security forces protecting it.

In 2018, Makki’s terrorist group, LeT, was implicated in the murder of senior journalist and Rising Kashmir editor-in-chief, Shujaat Bukhari, along with his two security guards.

When declaring Makki a “global terrorist,” the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) stated, “The Security Council Committee, by resolutions 1267 (1999), 1989 (2011), and 2253 (2015) regarding ISIL (Da’esh), Al-Qaida, and related individuals, groups, undertakings, and entities, approved the addition of the following entry to its ISIL (Da’esh) and Al-Qaida Sanctions List. This designation subjects the individual to asset freezes, travel bans, and arms embargoes as outlined in paragraph 1 of Security Council resolution 2610 (2021) and adopted under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.”
