Tennis star Novak Djokovic has claimed that he was “poisoned” with lead and mercury while detained in Melbourne in 2022, just before being deported on the eve of the Australian Open.
In an interview with GQ magazine published Thursday, Djokovic revealed he discovered unusually high levels of heavy metals in his body upon returning to Serbia. “I had some health issues. And I realised that in that hotel in Melbourne I was fed some food that poisoned me,” the 37-year-old said.
Djokovic, who was deported after a legal battle over his refusal to get vaccinated against Covid-19, added: “I had lead, a very high level of lead and mercury. That’s the only way I can explain it.”
The Australian government has not directly addressed the claim, citing privacy concerns. However, a spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs noted that detainees at the Park Hotel, where Djokovic was held, were provided with “freshly cooked, individually portioned meals” and a variety of nutritious food options that adhered to dietary or medical needs.
The Park Hotel, which catered to detainees, reportedly maintained food safety certifications and provided meal samples to contractors for quality control.

No Grudge Towards Australia
Despite the controversy, Djokovic insists he holds no resentment towards the Australian people. “A lot of Australians I’ve met have apologised for the treatment I received because they were embarrassed by their own government at that time,” he said.
He praised the change in government that reinstated his visa, allowing him to return in 2023 and claim his 10th Australian Open title. Now, Djokovic will aim for an 11th title and a record 25th Grand Slam when the tournament begins this Sunday.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Djokovic said he’s ready to move on, although he admitted he has not met those responsible for his deportation. “If I do one day, that’s fine. I’m happy to shake hands and move on,” he added.
Djokovic’s return to Melbourne has reignited conversations about the events of 2022, but the Serbian star remains focused on adding to his storied legacy.
