Meta is preparing to dismiss approximately 3,600 employees identified as low performers, according to an internal memo shared with Bloomberg on Tuesday. This decision is part of a broader restructuring effort led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg to enhance the company’s overall efficiency and performance.
The layoffs will impact around five percent of Meta’s workforce, which totaled approximately 72,400 employees as of September. The tech giant, known for its ownership of major platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, confirmed this development to AFP.

In the memo, Zuckerberg highlighted his intent to raise the bar for performance management within the organization. He stated, “I’ve decided to elevate the standards for performance management and to move out low performers at a faster pace.” The decision reflects the company’s shift toward fostering a more competitive and productive work environment.
Meta is reducing its workforce while planning to hire new talent to replace those dismissed. This strategy aims to keep the company innovative and resilient amidst challenges in the tech industry.
The CEO stated that the layoffs are performance-based. The goal is to retain the “strongest talent” and create opportunities to “bring in new people.”

Such performance-driven dismissals are a standard practice among large U.S. corporations. Last week, Microsoft also implemented similar measures, cutting less than one percent of its workforce, according to Business Insider.
Meta’s recent layoffs are part of wider organizational changes. The company is preparing for Donald Trump’s return to the White House on January 20. CEO Mark Zuckerberg has also aligned more closely with conservative ideologies. He hosted dinner meetings with Trump and appointed a Republican as Meta’s head of public affairs.
Last week, Zuckerberg announced the termination of Meta’s U.S. fact-checking program, which aimed to combat misinformation on its platforms. The program had faced backlash from conservative groups, who criticized it as a form of censorship. To replace it, Meta will introduce a system allowing users to add context to posts, similar to the approach adopted by X (formerly Twitter) under Elon Musk’s leadership.
In addition, the company has scaled back its diversity initiatives and relaxed its content moderation policies on Facebook and Instagram. These changes include loosening restrictions on certain forms of hostile speech, reflecting a shift in Meta’s approach to platform governance and community standards.
