Sridhar Vembu (L) and Dr Cyriac Abby Philips (R) clashed over different views on cow urine.

Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, known as The Liver Doc, has clashed again with Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu. This time, their disagreement centers around the scientific validity of certain traditional Ayurvedic remedies, focusing on ‘gomutra’ or cow urine.

Dr. Philips criticized Zoho’s billionaire founder after he asserted that cow urine offers various benefits.

The cow urine debate started when IIT Madras director V Kamakoti stated that cow urine has antibacterial, antifungal, and digestive qualities. Vembu, 57, supported these claims, arguing that modern science only recognizes the benefits of something traditional wisdom has long known.

After tweeting his support for Kamakoti, Sridhar Vembu discussed fecal transplants and defended geometry.

He wrote on X, “Those mocking cow urine are unaware that fecal transplants and fecal pills (yes!) from healthy individuals, especially those from pre-industrial societies with traditional diets, are gaining scientific attention for restoring beneficial gut bacteria. Gut bacteria are crucial to our immune system and play a key role in both our physical and mental health.”

He added, “So, the idea that cow urine and cow dung have beneficial properties is not mere superstition. Modern science is moving in that direction.”

    Uninformed older relative

Philips was upset by his post and brought up the previous insult, “health-illiterate boomer uncle,” to criticize Vembu. This time, he went further, calling the Zoho CEO someone who “speaks through his rear” and promotes “outdated nonsense.”

He emphasized that as a person of influence, the CEO of Zoho had a social responsibility to avoid spreading misinformation.

“As a person of influence, focus on sharing valuable information about how we can advance as a community through science and the scientific method, rather than promoting outdated beliefs and primitive therapiesDr. Philips, a renowned hepatologist, added that fecal transplants are scientifically supported, whereas urine therapy lacks any scientific foundation. or amplifying the voices of those who spread misinformation, like the IIT Madras professor,” said the Kerala-based doctor, who has over 280,000 X followers.

Dr. Philips, a renowned hepatologist, added that fecal transplants are scientifically supported, whereas urine therapy lacks any scientific foundation.

“If you want to understand the scientific basis behind fecal transplants, you can read our work here. We have pioneered this technique in saving patients suffering from severe alcohol-related hepatitis,” he wrote, including a link to the research paper.

“Urine therapy has no proven benefits, and there is no scientific basis for advocating its use. Educate yourself, and stop relying on strawman arguments,” the doctor concluded.
