Ravichandran Ashwin has unveiled his selections for India’s Champions Trophy XI, choosing KL Rahul and Shubman Gill over Rishabh Pant and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Ashwin emphasized the importance of capitalizing on a player’s current form, suggesting that Jaiswal’s recent performances make a compelling case for Gambhir inclusion. He proposed that if Jaiswal were to open alongside Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill could move to the No. 3 position, followed by Virat Kohli at No. 4, and either Rishabh Pant or KL Rahul at No. 5.This adjustment would likely result in Shreyas Iyer being left out of the playing XI.

Regarding team composition, Ashwin pointed out the absence of a fourth seamer in the 15-member squad selected by the Ajit Agarkar-led committee. He noted that the squad includes three finger-spinning all-rounders—Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, and Washington Sundar—but lacks an additional seam-bowling all-rounder.Ashwin suggested that including a player like Nitish Kumar Reddy could have provided more balance, allowing for the inclusion of four fast bowlers and two spinners in the playing XI.

Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that including seam-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy could have enhanced India’s team composition. He explained that if Kuldeep Yadav bats at number 9, the team fields two pacers and three spinners. However, with Nitish at number 8 and Kuldeep at 9, India could accommodate two fast bowlers, offering the flexibility of four pacers and two spinners.Ashwin expressed uncertainty about whether Nitish was considered for selection.

Ashwin says the only scenario in which Sundar can play is that if India decide to pick him for batting skills, which he says has impressed head coach Gautam Gambhir a lot. “Another scenario involves Washington Sundar. I’m not biased, but Gautam Gambhir highly values Washington due to his batting. He can also be used as a floater.
