Vada Pav is a widely loved and iconic street food in India. Originally from Maharashtra, where it is believed to have been created, it has gained popularity across the country. The dish consists of a deep-fried vada made from spiced potatoes, served in a pav (a soft bread roll), and typically accompanied by chutney. Vada Pav was included in the list of the 50 Best Sandwiches in the World, as compiled by Taste Atlas, a renowned food and travel guide. This ranking is based on their extensive data and is updated regularly. This marks the second time Vada Pav has been featured among the world’s top sandwiches.

vada pav was ranked 19th worldwide. But this year, its ranking has dropped. As of January 2025, vada pav occupies the 39th position on Taste Atlas’s list of the Best Sandwiches in the world. It is the only entry from India among the top 50.

“This iconic street food is said to have originated from a street vendor named Ashok Vaidya, who worked near the Dadar train station in the 1960s and 1970s. He thought of a way to satiate the hungry workers, and concluded that the ideal dish should be portable, affordable, and easy to prepare.”

The list of Best Sandwiches are top by Shawarma, Banh Mi (Vietnam) and Tombik Doner (Turkiye). There are three Vietnamese delicacies among the top 10

Moreover, Taste Atlas has recognised particular regions in India as some of the “Best Food Regions” across the globe. Punjab is rank 7th worldwide. The guide recommended delicacies like Amritsari kulcha, Tikka, Shahi paneer, Tandoori murgh and Saag paneer. Other Indian states made it to the top 100 list too.
