RG Kar Victim’s Parents Meet West Bengal Governor Seeking Justice

The parents of the RG Kar rape and murder victim met West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, urging him to raise their concerns with President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“On 30.01.2025, the parents of the R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital victim met HG and submitted a representation. They expressed their grievances and pleaded for justice,” the West Bengal Raj Bhavan Media Cell posted on X.

Governor Assures Support

The parents requested the Governor to raise their case with the President and Union Home Minister, to whom they had already submitted representations. The Governor assured them of action, offering solace and emphasizing that “humanity stands with them” and “justice shall prevail.”

Parents Withdraw Plea Before Supreme Court

On Wednesday, the victim’s parents withdrew their plea before the Supreme Court, which sought a fresh investigation. They had initially filed it as an Intervention Application (IA) in the suo motu case registered by the Court in August last year, shortly after the incident.

Supreme Court’s Observations

During Thursday’s hearing, the Bench, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, questioned Senior Advocate Karuna Nundy about proceeding with the case, given a similar petition was before the Calcutta High Court. After reviewing the affidavit, the Court advised caution and suggested Nundy withdraw the plea, filing a fresh one since the original petition was submitted before the trial and conviction.

Following this, Nundy withdrew the plea, with the option to file a new one. On January 20, a Sealdah court convicted and sentenced Sanjoy Roy to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of the RG Kar victim.

Public Outcry and Demands for Reinvestigation

Following the trial court’s decision, doctors and medical workers have demanded the death penalty for Roy and called for a reinvestigation, citing concerns over the investigation’s handling.
