Health department officials have reported that the suspected cases of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare nerve disorder, have increased to 130 in Pune and several other districts of Maharashtra.
So far, two patients— a 56-year-old woman from Pune and a man from Solapur district— have died due to suspected GBS in the state. Officials reported on Thursday that they had recorded three new suspected cases the previous day.

Currently, health officials are investigating 130 suspected cases and two suspected deaths related to GBS. Of these, 73 are confirmed GBS cases. An official stated that among the patients, 25 are from Pune Municipal Corporation areas, 74 from newly added villages under PMC, 13 from Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation areas, nine from Pune rural, and nine from other districts.

Ajit Pawar Orders Action Against Overcharging Hospitals and Ensures GBS Medication Supply
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, who chaired a District Planning Committee meeting in Pune on Thursday, instructed civic and district health officials to act against hospitals overcharging GBS patients.
As the Pune district guardian minister, Pawar instructed officials to ensure a sufficient supply of medications for GBS. This rare condition causes sudden numbness, muscle weakness, and severe limb weakness.

Union Health Ministry Deploys Team to Manage Guillain-Barre Syndrome Outbreak in Pune
The Union Health Ministry has sent a multi-disciplinary team to Pune to assist local authorities with the rise in Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases. The team includes seven experts from NCDC Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, the Regional Office of Health & Family Welfare, and NIV Pune. Three NIV experts had already been supporting local officials.

The team is collaborating with state health departments to assess the situation and recommend appropriate public health measures. Their role includes monitoring the outbreak and coordinating with state authorities. Health authorities have sent water samples from various areas of the city for chemical and biological analysis to the Public Health Laboratory. Authorities have also urged private medical practitioners to report any GBS cases to the relevant public health bodies. The state health department has advised citizens not to panic and assured them of preparedness to implement necessary preventive and control measures.
