A US military plane carrying over 100 Indian citizens, believed to have migrated to the United States illegally, landed in Amritsar on Wednesday.
Among them, 33 were from Haryana and Gujarat, 30 from Punjab, three from Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor stated that the US has the authority to deport individuals who are residing there illegally.
However, he remarked that the way the US was deporting Indian citizens was “unnecessary,” as they were not criminals and had no ill intentions.
In an interview with ANI, Tharoor suggested that the US should have deported Indians on a commercial or civilian flight. He emphasized that the deportation should have been carried out in a more “humane manner.”
He also pointed out that more than 1,100 Indians were deported under the Biden administration in 2024.
