A bilingual signboard in English and Bengali at a London railway station has sparked debate. UK MP Rupert Lowe insists that such signs “should be in English only. He expressed his disapproval, stating, “This is London – the station name should be in English, and English only.”

His remarks quickly gained traction online, sparking widespread discussions. As a result, the post went viral, attracting a wide range of reactions. Notably, among these was a response from Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and owner of X, which further amplified the debate.

Elon Musk, a close ally of former U.S. President Donald Trump recently expressed his support for 67-year-old Rupert Lowe and suggested replacing Nigel Farage as the leader of Reform UK.

UK MP Criticizes Bengali Signage at London Station

Lowe’s statement about the bilingual signage sparked mixed reactions online. Some users supported Lowe, arguing that signs in the UK should only be in English. Others defended the use of multiple languages, saying it was important to accommodate diverse communities.

The Bengali signage at Whitechapel Tube Station was added in 2022 to honor the Bangladeshi community’s contributions to east London. Tower Hamlets Council funded the initiative as part of broader efforts to improve the station and celebrate the area’s cultural diversity.

Whitechapel and its surrounding boroughs are home to the largest Bangladeshi community in the UK. As such, the inclusion of Bengali on public signage is a significant gesture. It reflects the area’s diverse demographic and acknowledges the historical contributions of the Bangladeshi community to the region’s culture. This move is seen as an important step in celebrating the multicultural makeup of the neighborhood and ensuring that all residents feel represented and valued.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had welcomed the initiative, praising the recognition of the Bengali language. Furthermore, in a post on X in March 2022, she expressed her pride, stating, “Proud to see that the London Tube Rail has incorporated Bengali signage at Whitechapel Station, highlighting the growing global significance and influence of this 1,000-year-old language.” This recognition, she noted, underscores the increasing global appreciation of Bengali and its cultural impact.
