Right after the Sri Lanka Test series, Mitchell Starc unexpectedly withdrew from the Champions Trophy, disrupting Australia’s plans for the ICC event. Australia, struggling in knockout matches since their last Champions Trophy win in 2009, faced further setbacks with injuries sidelining Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Marsh.
At the time, Starc requested privacy, but weeks later, he opened up on the Willow Talk Podcast with his wife, Alyssa Healy. He cited “personal reasons” and the need to recover from an ankle issue as key factors behind his decision.

Mitchell Starc Prioritizes Recovery Ahead of Crucial Fixtures
Mitchell Starc played through ankle pain in the Sri Lanka Test series but stressed the need to recover for key fixtures like the Test final and the West Indies tour. He did not elaborate on his ‘personal reasons’ but prioritized being fully fit for upcoming challenges.
After enduring injuries in the India and Sri Lanka series, Starc chose to avoid further risks due to a packed schedule. With the IPL and World Test Championship Final ahead, he focused on fitness, keeping the Test final as his main goal.

Starc’s Focus on Test Cricket and World Test Championship
Starc acknowledged the IPL but emphasized that his top priority is the Test final. He aims to focus on recovery, play some cricket in the coming months, and be fully prepared for the final. This season, he will make his debut for the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
Starc, who has long prioritized representing Australia, admitted that the team initially didn’t focus much on the World Test Championship during its first cycle, as it was a new concept. While he acknowledged the format still has flaws, missing out due to an over-rate penalty was frustrating. However, after winning the Test mace in the second cycle, he is eager to claim it again when Australia faces South Africa in the final this June.
