A Delhi court, on Wednesday, sentenced a man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for attacking a man and his two minor daughters with acid in 2017. Additionally, the court directed the District Legal Services Authority of West District, Delhi, to provide a total compensation of ₹20 lakh to the victims. The court will give ₹10 lakh to the father and award ₹5 lakh each to the two daughters.
“… it can be seen that this incident destroyed the victims’ childhood and deprived their father of his employment opportunity.”. “Hence, it becomes imperative to provide Restorative and Compensatory Justice to the injured persons…,” said Additional Sessions Judge Aditi Garg in her order dated March 5.

Court Highlights the Financial and Psychological Impact of Acid Attack on Victims and Their Family
The court was hearing arguments against 28-year-old Raghav Mukhiya, who the authorities had convicted under Section 326A (acid attack) of the Indian Penal Code on November 8 last year.
“The victims were both school-going children at the relevant time and, due to the incident of the acid attack, both of them could not pursue their career to their full potential. This incident had not just handicapped the family financially, it also impacted the family members psychologically,” the court noted, adding that one of the minors had to take a gap year due to the attack.

Additional Public Prosecutor Aditya Trehan, representing the state, had argued that the offence committed by the convict was a heinous crime. He also submitted before the court that Mukhiya had ruined the lives of three persons by throwing acid upon them.
The court ordered the District Legal Services Authority of West District, Delhi, to pay a total compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the three acid victims (Rs 10 lakh, and Rs 5 lakh to the daughters, and Rs 5 lakh to the father).
