People often overlook kidney disease compared to other health issues like cancer or heart disease. It may show no obvious symptoms in its early stages, but doctors caution that you should not ignore certain warning signs. These include constant tiredness, swelling in the hands and feet, changes in urination, and unexplained shortness of breath, which could signal kidney problems.

Experts Warn on Early Signs of Kidney Disease
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr. Asheesh Malhotra, senior nephrology consultant at Yatharth Hospital in Noida Extension, explained, “Kidneys are essential for filtering waste, balancing fluids, and supporting overall health. However, kidney disease often develops quietly, with symptoms emerging only in the later stages. Identifying early warning signs can help prevent severe complications.”
Dr. Jayant Kumar Hota, senior nephrology consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, shared with HT Lifestyle, “Symptoms such as back pain, nausea, high blood pressure, and itchy skin can indicate worsening kidney function. People at higher risk—such as those with diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney disease, or individuals over 60—should be especially cautious.”
Dr. Jayant Kumar Hota emphasized that early intervention plays a crucial role in kidney health. By monitoring kidney function regularly and making lifestyle changes, it’s possible to preserve function and delay or prevent complications such as kidney failure. He stated, “If symptoms develop or risk factors are present, it’s vital to seek medical evaluation. Taking proactive measures leads to better long-term health, highlighting the importance of awareness and timely action to protect kidney health. Testing is key for early detection.” He added, “A blood test that measures the estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR) helps assess kidney function, while a Urine Albumin-Creatinine Ratio (uACR) test detects protein leakage, which is an early sign of kidney damage. Identifying these signs and getting timely screenings can help prevent the progression of the disease.”
