India and Pakistan are among cricket’s biggest rivals, but it’s no secret that India has made significant progress in the sport. Beyond holding a strong head-to-head record against Pakistan in ICC events, India’s recent performances highlight the gap between the two teams. When PM Narendra Modi was asked which team is better, he settled the debate with facts.
PM Modi has a deep passion for sports. Over the years, the Indian government has actively promoted various sports and introduced initiatives like Khelo India. A strong advocate of sports’ unifying power, Modi emphasized how they serve as a platform to bring people together.
India’s Dominance in Cricket and PM Narendra Modi’s Perspective on Sports
“I believe sports have the ability to energize the entire world. The spirit of sports unites people across nations. That’s why I would never want sports to lose credibility. They are more than just games—they foster deep connections and play a crucial role in human evolution,” he said in a podcast with Lex Fridman.
When asked to choose between India and Pakistan as the better cricket team, PM Modi took a modest approach, admitting he isn’t an expert in the technical aspects of the game. However, he pointed out that recent results favor India in the debate.

“As for which team is better, I’m not an expert in the game’s techniques. Only specialists can judge that. They determine the best teams and players. But sometimes, results speak for themselves. Just recently, India and Pakistan played a match, and the outcome made it clear which team was superior,” he stated.
PM Modi was also asked about the ‘greatest footballer of all time.’ For him, two names from different generations stand out—Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
“Many regions in India have a strong football culture. Our women’s team is excelling, and our men’s team is making good progress. In the 1980s, Diego Maradona was an iconic figure, a hero of his time. If you ask today’s generation, they will instantly name Lionel Messi,” he added.
