Curd, or dahi, has been a staple in Indian households for generations, often enjoyed as a refreshing addition to meals. Packed with probiotics, calcium, and essential nutrients, it is commonly believed to support digestion and boost gut health. Incorporating curd into your diet regularly is associated with better digestion, stronger bones, and improved immunity. However, its impact can differ based on individual factors like metabolism, gut health, and overall dietary habits. While many people vouch for its benefits, some may experience unexpected effects. So, what actually happens when curd becomes a daily part of your post-lunch routine?

This Is What Happens to Your Immunity When You Eat Curd Regularly

Kanikka Malhotra, a consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator, shares with Indian Express that consuming curd regularly after lunch can have a significant impact on gut microbiota due to its probiotic content, particularly strains like Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. These beneficial bacteria help enhance microbial diversity while inhibiting the growth of harmful microbes such as Enterobacteriaceae and Staphylococcus.

Additionally, the probiotics in curd aid in nutrient absorption, help reduce bloating, and may lower the risk of inflammatory bowel diseases by maintaining a balanced gut environment. However, Malhotra emphasizes that individual responses can differ based on existing gut microbiota and dietary patterns. She further suggests that combining curd with fiber-rich foods can maximize these benefits by fostering a prebiotic-probiotic synergy.

Although curd is rich in probiotics and essential nutrients, Malhotra cautions that it may not be suitable for everyone. “For individuals who are lactose intolerant, consuming curd daily could lead to digestive issues such as bloating and diarrhea,” she explains.

Excessive consumption may also result in digestive discomfort and potential weight gain. Additionally, Malhotra points out that an overabundance of calcium from curd could slightly hinder the absorption of essential minerals like iron and zinc. To reap the benefits of curd without experiencing any adverse effects, she emphasizes the importance of moderation. “Feel free to include it in your lunch routine, but pay attention to how your body reacts and make adjustments as needed,” she advises.
