National Kitten Day, celebrated on July 10, is the purrfect time to appreciate the charm and diversity of our feline friends. From strange fur to cats with big ears, here are ten unique cat breeds that stand out for their distinct features:

TOP TEN WEIRD AND UNIQUE CAT BREEDS

    Sphynx

    Sphynx

The Sphynx’s most distinctive features are its nearly hairless body, tall ears, wrinkles, peach-fuzz skin, and round belly. Though you might think a hairless cat would be hypoallergenic, it’s not true! Cat allergies are caused by dander, and the Sphynx has plenty of that. The Sphynx’s hairless coat is caused by a naturally occurring gene mutation that was then crossed with Rex cats.

    Peterbald

    Peterbald

Often thought of as mostly hairless, Peterbald cats have up to five different coat types, including short or brush coats. Known for having more pronounced webbing on their feet, these cats can use their feet to pick things up or even open doors!

    Munchkin

    Munchkin

Known as the dachshund of cat breeds, Munchkin cats have shorter legs but otherwise a standard build. Recognized as a breed in the mid-nineties, the Munchkin has been controversial due to the genetic mutation causing the long bone deformity.

    Devon Rex

    Devon Rex

One of the few cat breeds with big ears, Devon Rex cats have short, curly, soft hair. Discovered in the 1950s, this breed is known for its curly coat, prominent ears, and tiny snout. They have huge personalities and love to socialize.

    Japanese Bobtail

    Japanese Bobtail

Born with a short, puffy tail like a rabbit’s, some Japanese Bobtails even hop like bunnies when they run! With back legs slightly longer than the front, these cats have an athletic appearance and date back to 600 A.D.

    Scottish Fold

    Scottish Fold

Known for their bended ears, Scottish Fold cats look almost earless. With round faces and large, circular eyes, they have an owlish look. The breed developed from a cat named Susie in Scotland, discovered by a shepherd in 1961.

    Khao Manee

    Khao Manee

These cats from Thailand, whose name means “White Gem,” have creamy white coats and bright eyes of green, blue, or gold—or sometimes two different colors. Without an undercoat due to Thailand’s warm temperatures, they’ve been cherished for almost a thousand years.

    Pixiebob

    Pixiebob

Resembling a wild bobcat but in the size of a domestic cat, Pixiebob cats are said to come from naturally occurring bobcat hybrids. Along with their distinctive bobbed tails, they are prone to polydactylism.

    Savannah

    Savannah

The result of a cross between a domestic cat and the serval, a medium-sized wild African cat, the Savannah Cat looks like a wild cat from the African Savannah. Exceptionally large, weighing up to 30 pounds, they boast large ears, dark tear stands, and cheetah-like markings.

    Teacup Persians

    Teacup Persians

A variety of Persian cat bred to be extremely small, some Teacup Persians can fit in the palm of your hand! However, breeding cats to be this small can cause health problems, making this breed controversial.

Celebrate National Kitten Day by learning more about these unique breeds and appreciating the incredible diversity of our feline friends!
