Shah Rukh Khan : hesitance to take on a supporting role

In a captivating revelation, renowned director Paul Schrader has discussed his scrapped project . Xtreme City, which was set to be Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s first venture into Western cinema. The film, featuring Leonardo DiCaprio as well, was eventually shelved after SRK reportedly lost interest partway through, according to Schrader. An acclaimed American screenwriter and filmmaker, Schrader is celebrated for his contributions to iconic films. Some of those are such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and American Gigolo.

Paul Schrader Reflects on Abandoned Film Xtreme City with Shah Rukh Khan and Leonardo DiCaprio

In a recent podcast, Paul Schrader shared insights into the unrealized film, noting that the trio had initially been highly enthusiastic about the project. They even convened in Berlin to discuss it, with Martin Scorsese attached as the producer. However, Schrader stated that SRK’s dedication to the film gradually waned, ultimately causing the project to fall apart. He also mentioned that the screenplay was to be co-written by Mushtaq Shiekh.

Paul Schrader Reveals Why SRK Backed Out of Xtreme City

Schrader noted that SRK, had done the film, would have had to play “second banana” to DiCaprio, something he’s never done. “SRK is the boss. He hires directors. Sometimes he hires multiple directors: he’ll hire somebody for the musical number; he’ll hire somebody else for the action; he’ll hire somebody else for the personal relationship scenes. He can do that. He has never really worked under the harness of an auteur, and that, I could see, was starting to grate on him.
