Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge

A heated exchange occurred in the Rajya Sabha on Monday during the debate on the Constitution of India, with Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge clashing in Parliament.

Sitharaman criticized the Congress party and its leaders, including former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, claiming that the Constitutional amendments they introduced aimed not at strengthening democracy but at safeguarding the interests of those in power.

The finance minister further stated that India, a country that continues to pride itself on freedom of expression, saw its first interim government introduce a constitutional amendment within a year of adopting the Constitution, aimed at limiting the freedom of speech of its citizens.

Kharge Slams Sitharaman Over Constitution Remarks

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge responded to Sitharaman’s comments on the Constitution, stating that although she may have a strong command of language, her actions do not reflect the same quality.

During the Rajya Sabha debate, Kharge remarked, “I want to tell them that I too know how to read. I studied in a municipal school, while she (Nirmala Sitharaman) studied at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Her English and Hindi are good, but her actions are not.”

He also questioned how those who “dislike” the Constitution, the national flag, and the Ashok Chakra are now “attempting to teach” the Congress party.

Kharge added, “What is happening here? When the Constitution was created, these people burned it. They also burned effigies of Babasaheb Ambedkar, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi at Ramleela Maidan in Delhi on the day they adopted the Constitution.
