Addressing the first Chintan Shivir (brainstorming session) of state home ministers and top police officers, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today pitched the idea of a single uniform for police forces across the country.

“The ‘One Nation, One Uniform’ for police is just an idea. I am not trying to impose it on you. Just give it a thought. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50 or 100 years. All the states should just think it over,” the prime minister said, adding that he believed the identity of police across the country should be the same.

Building the case for the same, PM Modi said that as India has ‘one nation, one ration card’, ‘one nation, one mobility card’, ‘one nation, one sign language’, similarly India can think of going ahead with the idea of ‘one nation, one uniform’ for the police force of the country.

He said the move not only will generate profit but will also give a common identity to law enforcement as citizens will recognise police personnel anywhere in the country. “Just like there is a post box that has a distinct identity, police uniforms should be identifiable uniformly across the country,” Modi said via videoconferencing.

“I am just putting forward this as a thought for your consideration. It will provide more help and states can have their number or insignia. It may happen, it may happen in 5, 50, or 100 years. All the states should just think over it,” he said.

Reiterating the need to obliterate the ground network of terrorism, Modi remarked that every government in its own capacity and understanding is trying to do its part. “It is the need of the hour to come together as one and handle the situation. Every form of Naxalism, be it the one with guns or the one with pens, has to be uprooted to prevent them from misleading the youth of the country,” he said.
