The Sonepat-produced trainsets will be lighter and more energy-efficient than conventional steel-built trains.
While other significant participants in the sector passed on this procurement, French multinational rolling stock manufacturer Alstom and Hyderabad-based Medha Servo Drives submitted a bid to build 100 aluminium Vande Bharat trainsets in collaboration with Swiss giant Stadler.
To be manufactured in Sonepat, the trainsets will be lighter than traditional steel-make trains and more energy efficient.
Due to a lack of both the necessary technology and materials, India does not have any aluminium trains. With this project, that will alter.

After evaluating the technical bids, which were filed on Thursday, financial bids will be requested. Stadler, a Swiss manufacturer, has the necessary skills and knowledge to construct aluminium trains.
