A recent debate on social media has emerged, contrasting OpenAI’s ChatGPT with Perplexity, another AI tool, to determine which offers superior performance. Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma contributed to this discussion with a clever analogy. On X (formerly Twitter), Sharma likened using ChatGPT to discussing Taylor Swift with a grandfather who is more familiar with rock legends such as Bono and Roger Waters. This comparison was intended to highlight the perceived generational gap and differences in the quality of responses between the two AI systems.

The debate was sparked by a post from Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI. Srinivas compared the responses of ChatGPT and Perplexity AI to the question: “What caused the restriction of X (Twitter) in Brazil?” He shared two screenshots showing the distinct answers provided by each AI tool. According to Srinivas, Perplexity AI delivers more accurate and up-to-date information, particularly regarding current events.

In response, Paytm CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma reshared Srinivas’s post, adding his own commentary. He emphasized the notable differences between the responses generated by ChatGPT and Perplexity AI, underscoring his view on the relative performance of the two AI tools.

The Paytm founder compared ChatGPT to discussing Taylor Swift with a grandfather who prefers Bono and Roger Waters, implying it’s less relevant to current trends. He praised Perplexity for its consistent intelligence, noting that ChatGPT’s data limitations affect its performance on recent events.

In response, one user noted that while knowledge involves understanding all available GPTs and their uses, wisdom is knowing which GPT excels in which area. Another commented that, in modern product development, being objectively accurate is crucial. A third user claimed that Perplexity is significantly better than ChatGPT and Google for up-to-date information.

Perplexity AI, founded in August 2022 by Aravind Srinivas and team, emerged just months before OpenAI. The AI field has since become highly competitive, with major players like Google and Microsoft introducing their own AI assistants.
