Google CEO Sundar Pichai has highlighted 2025 as a pivotal year for the company due to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Speaking at a strategy meeting in California, he emphasized the need for employees to “recognize the urgency of this moment” and to “accelerate as a company.”
“The stakes are high,” Pichai stated, as reported by CNBC. “These are transformative times. In 2025, our focus must be unwavering on harnessing the potential of AI and addressing real-world user challenges.”
A key priority for Google in the coming year is its ambitious AI initiative centered on the Gemini app. This app, designed to offer a variety of tools, plays a crucial role in Google’s strategy to stay ahead in the competitive generative AI landscape.
Mr. Pichai acknowledged the recent progress made with the Gemini app but stressed the importance of continued effort to secure its position as an industry leader.
“Gemini has gained significant momentum, especially in recent months. However, there is still work to be done in 2025 to bridge the gap and solidify our leadership in this space,” he noted.

Expanding Gemini’s reach to a wider consumer audience will be a top priority for Google in 2025. Pichai shared ambitious plans for the app, aiming to attract 500 million users, placing it alongside Google’s flagship products. “Our primary focus next year will be scaling Gemini for consumers,” he concluded.
The December 18 meeting took place amidst heightened scrutiny of Google, fueled by a series of legal challenges.
In August, a federal judge ruled that the tech giant unlawfully maintained a monopoly in the search market, and ongoing investigations could significantly alter its operations. Despite these challenges, CEO Sundar Pichai emphasized the need for focus. “I’m aware of the global scrutiny we’re facing. It’s a consequence of our scale and success and reflects a broader trend of technology’s societal impact. Now, more than ever, we must avoid distractions,” he stated.
One of Google’s boldest objectives for 2025 is scaling Gemini to reach 500 million users. While acknowledging rising competition, Pichai stressed that success isn’t always about being first. “History shows you don’t need to be first; what matters is executing well and delivering a best-in-class product,” he remarked. “That’s the essence of 2025.”
The meeting also featured previews of upcoming AI tools, including the Jules coding assistant and NotebookLM, an AI-powered note-taking product.
