Elon Musk has claimed that the large-scale cyberattack on his social media platform, X (formerly Twitter), had digital traces pointing to Ukraine. In an interview with Fox News, he stated, “We’re not exactly sure what happened, but there was a massive cyberattack attempting to bring down the X system, with IP addresses originating from the Ukraine region.”
Musk Links X Cyberattack to Ukraine
The attack, which started early Monday, caused widespread outages across Asia, Europe, and North America. Downdetector, a service tracking disruptions, reported that users experienced prolonged access issues on X.
This isn’t the first time the Tesla and SpaceX CEO has blamed cyberattacks for platform disruptions. He previously linked a similar outage last year to an attack, which happened around the time of a scheduled live-streamed interview with Donald Trump.
Musk reinforced his claims by sharing a post from the X account DogeDesigner, which suggested the attack was part of a broader campaign against him. The post connected the cyberattack to recent protests against his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and acts of vandalism targeting Tesla facilities.

Musk speculated that the attack required “tremendous resources,” suggesting it could have been carried out by a nation-state or a well-coordinated group.
In an interview with Fox Business, he claimed that the computers involved had digital footprints tracing back to Ukraine. However, cybersecurity experts warned that attributing an attack solely based on IP addresses is unreliable, as attackers can easily disguise their locations.
As X worked to restore service, outage reports peaked at over 40,000 users experiencing connectivity issues, according to tracking data. Many users faced intermittent access throughout the day.
Since Musk’s $44 billion acquisition of Twitter in 2022, the company has significantly downsized its workforce. Technical problems have become more frequent, and his decision to reinstate previously banned accounts—some known for spreading conspiracy theories—has drawn criticism from advocacy groups.
