3 cops martyred and 14 others injured after terrorists fired upon a police vehicle near a police camp at Zewan on the outskirts of Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.
Officials said three militants fired indiscriminately on the vehicle near a police camp in Srinagar city.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and has sought details on Monday evening’s terror attack of 3 cops martyred.
The area has been cordoned off, and a search operation is underway. The suspected militants managed to escape under cover of darkness as security forces retaliated.
Police said militants fired indiscriminately on a police bus of the 9th Battalion of J-K Police’s armed wing at Zewan on the outskirts of Srinagar city. It left 16 police personnel injured.
They immediately shifted to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital at Badamibagh where two policemen died.
Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti offered her condolences to the families of those killed in the attack. She tweeted: “[The government of India’s] false narrative of normalcy in Kashmir stands exposed yet there has been no course correction.”
Omar Abdullah, former chief minister of Kashmir, tweeted his condolences too.
Kashmir’s Inspector General of Police, Vijay Kumar, said “credible sources revealed that the attack carried by Kashmir Tigers, an offshoot of Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM).
“One of the terrorists injured and the group involved in this gruesome terrorist attack brought to justice.”
Earlier The Kashmir Zone Police tweeted: “#Terrorists fired upon a police vehicle near Zewan in Pantha Chowk area of #Srinagar. 14 personnel #injured in the attack. All the injured personnel evacuated to hospital. Area cordoned off. Further details shall follow. @JmuKmrPolice.”
One ASI and a Selection Grade Constable succumbed to their injuries in the attack that took place in the Pantha Chowk area of the city, the Jammu and Kashmir Police said.
