    The abduction of a young doctor on Saturday night in the previously Maoist-affecte area of Malkangiri district has fueled speculation that the rebels may be involve.

    Amlan Bhoi, 29, who has been working at the Kalimela Community Health Centre in Malkangiri since January, was discoverd missing from his government quarters on Saturday night. Police found a poster put up by the CPI (Maoist) on the wall of Bhoi’s quarters at Kalimela CHC, demanding the transfer of all old staff from Kalimela CHC and the posting of specialists at the hospital. They found his mobile phone and motorcycle at his residence.

    Malkangiri Doctor Missing: Altercation Over Postmortem Request

    Chief District Medical Officer of Malkangiri, Prafulla Kumar Nanda, reported that after finishing his duty at the CHC, Bhoi returned to his quarters around 10 PM on Saturday. However, he was found missing from his residence on Sunday morning.

    Nanda mentioned that on Friday, they brought the body of a woman named Lachi Khurami (37) from Konta village in the neighboring Sukma district of Chhattisgarh to Kalimela CHC. When Bhoi requested the people accompanying the deceased to conduct a postmortem, they objected and had an altercation with him. Bhoi subsequently informed the police, who conducted the postmortem shortly thereafter.

    Malkangiri Doctor Abduction: Police Investigate Maoist Involvement

    Sub-divisional Police Officer of Malkangiri, Sachin Patel, state that the police are still investigating whether Maoists are involvd in the incident. “He was abductd either late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. We are reviewing CCTV footage from the area,” he said.

    A native of Kandhamal district, Bhoi was appointd as a doctor at Kalimela CHC in January this year.

    Malkangiri, once notorious for frequent Maoist attacks, witnessed no Maoist-related violence during the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in April this year. In the former Maoist stronghold of Swabhiman Anchala in Malkangiri, residents voted at polling booths near their villages instead of at BSF camps.
