Congress leader Rahul Gandhi received bail from a special court in Bengaluru in connection with a defamation case filed by the BJP’s Karnataka unit. The case pertains to advertisements published during the 2023 Karnataka Legislative Assembly election campaign that labeled the BJP as corrupt. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar were granted bail on the first day of the hearing on June 1. The court had instructed Rahul Gandhi to appear in person on June 7.

Rahul Gandhi Granted Bail, Attends Court in BJP Defamation Case
Rahul Gandhi appeared in court and submitted a surety provided by former Member of Parliament D.K. Suresh.
Earlier, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC chief D.K. Shivakumar welcomed him at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Shivakumar.
Gandhi, along with Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, met with newly-elected Congress MPs from Karnataka and defeated candidates at Bharath Jodo Bhavan in Bengaluru at 11:30 a.m.
Shivakumar remarked that Gandhi would attend court regarding a case filed by the BJP over a Congress advertisement about the corruption rate card. He noted that BJP MLA Yatnal had stated the Chief Minister’s post costs ₹2,500 crore in BJP, and the advertisement included media reports on BJP’s corruption. According to Shivakumar, Gandhi’s name was included in the complaint for publicity purposes.

Court Orders Rahul Gandhi’s Appearance in BJP Defamation Case
On June 1, the BJP Karnataka unit requested a non-bailable warrant against Rahul Gandhi for failing to appear in court. In response, Congress leaders argued that Gandhi was not involved in publishing the advertisements in Karnataka.
The court excused Gandhi’s appearance on June 1 but mandated that he attend on June 7.
The defamation case stemmed from a private complaint filed by BJP MLC Keshav Prasad on May 8, 2023. The complaint alleged that Congress leaders were branding the BJP Government in the state, from 2019 to 2023, as corrupt.
