SC To Hear Sandip Ghosh's Plea Against CBI Probe Into RG Kar Hospital 'Scam' Today

Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, is contesting the Calcutta High Court’s directive for a CBI investigation into financial irregularities during his leadership at the hospital. The Supreme Court will hear Ghosh’s petition on Friday. Ghosh is challenging the High Court’s August 23 ruling, issued by Justice Rajarshi Bhardwaj, which called for the CBI to investigate the alleged financial misconduct. This decision followed a petition by whistleblower Akhtar Ali, a former deputy medical superintendent at the hospital. The court also mandated that the CBI’s inquiry be monitored under its supervision.

On the same day, Sandip Ghosh appealed the ruling to a division bench of the Calcutta High Court, consisting of Justices Harish Tandon and Hiranmay Bhattacharya. He requested an expedited hearing but was instructed to first obtain a copy of the single-judge bench’s order. Rather than returning to the division bench with the order, Ghosh chose to move directly to the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

On August 25, CBI officials conducted raids at multiple locations in Kolkata, including Ghosh’s residence, as part of the investigation. By September 2, the CBI’s economic offences wing had arrested Ghosh and three others. A special court in Kolkata remanded the four, including Ghosh, to CBI custody for eight days on September 3.
