Wellington, New Zealand: On Wednesday, a New Zealand judge sentenced Lauren Dickason to 18 years in prison for the 2021 murder of her three young daughters. According to a court official at Christchurch High Court, Dickason will start her sentence at a mental health hospital under state custody.

Following her sentencing, Dickason expressed in a statement to local media that she had “failed” her children and husband, who has since returned to South Africa. She also conveyed “the deepest and most sincere remorse for the extreme pain and hurt” caused by her actions. Justice Cameron Mander did not impose a minimum non-parole period, allowing Dickason to avoid life imprisonment, which is typically the standard penalty for murder in New Zealand.

Mother Convicted of Murdering Three Daughters in New Zealand

Lauren Dickason was found guilty last August on three counts of murder for smothering her two-year-old twins, Maya and Karla, and her six-year-old daughter, Liane. The killings occurred in September 2021 at their home in Timaru while her husband was out to dinner with colleagues. He discovered the bodies of his children upon returning home.

The family had recently moved to New Zealand from South Africa, having arrived just weeks before the tragic incident. During last year’s trial, Dickason admitted to killing her daughters but claimed a defense of insanity and infanticide, citing the stress of the move as a trigger.
