Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear spoke about the tragedy on Sunday, revealing that flooding storms stranded many people who needed rescue. In response, US President Donald Trump declared a disaster for Kentucky and directed FEMA to manage the relief operations.
Gov. Beshear mentioned that most of the fatalities, including a mother and her 7-year-old child, occurred when cars became trapped in high water. He urged people to avoid traveling, saying, “Stay off the roads right now and stay alive.” He also expressed pride in the Kentuckians involved in the search and rescue efforts, emphasizing, “This is the search and rescue phase, and I am very proud of all the Kentuckians that are out there responding, putting their lives on the line.”
Power outage in 39,000 homes due to flooding storms
Since the storm began on Sunday, Beshear reported 1,000 rescues across the state. Approximately 39,000 homes experienced power outages, and Beshear cautioned that strong winds in certain areas could worsen the situation.
15 cm rainfall recorded
Bob Oravec, a senior forecaster with the National Weather Service, reported that some areas of Kentucky and Tennessee saw up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) of rain. “The impacts will persist for some time, with swollen streams and ongoing flooding,” Oravec stated on Sunday.
