Andhra Pradesh water crisis: 1,400+ hamlets face shortages, action plan underway

As summer approaches, Andhra Pradesh is grappling with a severe water crisis, with several districts facing acute shortages and some already running dry. According to a report by the Deccan Chronicle, over 1,400 hamlets in the hilltop regions of Parvathipuram Manyam and ASR districts are experiencing a critical drinking water shortage.

In response, district administrations have acknowledged the crisis and are formulating an action plan. Officials stated that out of the 1,200 affected villages, the majority are in ASR district, while 187 are in Manyam district.

Severe Water Shortage Hits ASR District and Nearby Areas

Several hamlets in ASR District facing severe water shortages include Ananthagiri, Munchingput, Paderu town and nearby villages, Araku Valley, and parts of Hukumpeta near Devarapalli mandal in Anakapalli district.

ASR district collector Dinesh Kumar highlighted that groundwater levels have dropped in around 400 hamlets, many of which rely on spring water sources that often dry up by mid-summer.

Expanding Water Access: Action Plan to Tackle ASR District’s Drinking Water Crisis

He mentioned that the district administration has identified 360 permanent spring water sources in the agency so far. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission, the administration has already provided piped water to 300 villages and plans to cover more in the coming months.

The district collector stated that they have formulated an action plan to address the crisis, with an estimated cost of around Rs 630 crore. He emphasized that this plan aims to provide a long-term solution to the drinking water crisis across the ASR district.
