HRD Forum of Vidarbha Industries Association (VIA) recently conducted a webinar on ‘Emotional intelligence and its connect with people management.’ Well-known speaker, J B Kabra, Founder of Mind Movers Management Consultants Pvt Ltd, Thane with over 17 years of experience conducted the session.
Kabra said, “Emotional intelligence (EI) is the ability to identify and regulate one’s emotions and understand the emotions of others.
EI used effectively ultimately leads to improved interpersonal skills. EI is the capacity of recognising own feelings and those of others, for motivating and managing emotions in positive way to relieve stress and overcome challenges and defuse conflicts.”.
“On the other hand, he said that Emotional quotient (EQ) is critical to manage ones behaviour, move smoothly through social situations and make critical choices in life. A high EQ helps one to build relationships, reduce team stress, defuse conflict and improve job satisfaction.”
He explained physiology of emotions and various types of emotions every human comes across in his life viz. anger, sadness, fear, enjoyment, love, surprise, disgust and shame.
Emphasised was given on positive emotions rather than negative emotions. Positive emotions gives ability to nurture good relationships, conflict resolution, enthusiasm, zeal, confidence, ability to laugh, optimism, risk, ability to motivate, persistence in face of frustration, impulse control, instant gratification, distress control, empathy, social competencies and leadership.
EQ can be applied in organisations in leadership is team building :
“EQ can directly impact the areas at work of recruitment, appraisal, negotiation, teams, successful planning, sales and change initiative.
Some areas where EQ can be applied in organisations in leadership is team building, self discipline, decision-making, interpersonal skill, initiative, drive and subordinate development,” he added.
Earlier, Neelam Bowade, Convener of HRD Forum made opening remarks. Hemant Lodha, Chairman of VIA HRD Forum said, “EQ or EI is defined as ability to perceive, use, understand, manage and handle emotions.” “People with high intelligence can recognise their own emotion and those of others.
Emotional information can guide thinking and behaviour different feelings and label them appropriately and adjust emotions to adapt to environment,” he said.
Suresh Pandilwar, Co-Chairman of VIA HRD Forum said, “Emphasis should be given on 3H i.e., heart, head and honesty.
