Established in 1959 with support from the West German government, IIT Madras (IITM) has achieved remarkable progress over the years. IIT Madras: Expanding Ambitions and Pioneering Innovations
Over the past few decades, the aspirations of IIT Madras (and other IITs) and the expectations placed on them have grown significantly. In response, IITM has launched several pioneering initiatives, including advancements in research, technological support for Indian companies, innovation and start-up incubation, and making education more accessible. The Institute of Eminence grant from the Indian government has fueled the creation of Centres of Excellence (CoE) at IITM, aiming to be among the top five globally in their respective fields. Additionally, IITM’s industrial consultancy and sponsored research division manages hundreds of projects, delivering cutting-edge technology to both Indian and international companies.

IIT Madras: Pioneering Research and Revolutionizing Education in India
The first university-based research park in India is located at IITM and has had a disproportionate impact in just a few short years, generating unicorns, providing employment and valuation in billions of dollars. The National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) initiative, followed by the online Bachelor of Science (BS) programme, has democratised education in India. NPTEL has one of the largest repositories in the world of engineering courses that are delivered online.
