Pune Scientists Develop Innovative Drug Delivery

Researchers at the Agharkar Research Institute (ARI) in Pune, under the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Introduced a groundbreaking drug delivery method that could benefit patients suffering from pulmonary aspergillosis, cystic fibrosis, asthma, and other lung-related conditions.

This innovative approach utilizes polymeric nanoparticles, which may also prove advantageous for individuals with cancer, HIV, or those who have undergone prolonged corticosteroid therapy. According to the researchers. The use of nanoparticles for controlled and efficient drug release is considered one of the most advanced techniques in drug delivery. While current antifungal treatments, particularly azoles, target the fungal membrane, growing resistance to these drugs highlights the need for novel delivery strategies.

In this study, the ARI team developed polymeric nanoparticles loaded with Nikkomycin, a chitin synthesis inhibitor produced by the bacterial species Streptomyces. Since human cells lack chitin, a vital component of fungal cell walls, antifungal drugs can precisely target these cells. The research found that the drug-loaded nanoparticles effectively inhibited the growth of Aspergillus species. Thereby preventing fungal infections such as Aspergillosis, caused by Aspergillus fumigatus and Aspergillus flavus.

ARI’s Safe Nanoformulation Promises Wider Impact with Public-Private Partnership

The ARI team’s nanoformulation was also found to be non-toxic and free of hemolytic effects. Making it a safe and promising option for inhalation therapy in treating pulmonary aspergillosis. The study, led by PhD candidate Kamal Mayattu and scientist Dr. Vandana Ghormade, was published in the journal Zeitschrift für Naturforschung C.

The research team believes that a public-private partnership is crucial for commercializing. These antifungal nanoformulations and are optimistic about the future. They are hopeful that this collaboration will enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of these innovative treatments on a larger scale.
