In 2023, Canada admitted more than four hundred thousand individuals as permanent residents, with Indians comprising over 130,000 of these newcomers, according to the latest figures from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada.
As per the data released by IRCC, Canada exceeded its target for the number of permanent residents it planned to allow in 2023. Canada had planned to admit only 465,000 residents. However, as per the data released, 471,550 new permanent residents were admitted.
Amongst these new permanent residents, the maximum number of admissions were given to Indians. As per the data available, around 139,715 Indians were given a Canadian PR. Along with India, Citizens from China, the Philippines, Afghanistan and Nigeria were granted the status of permanent residents.

Out of this data, IRCC further revealed that around 293,000 newcomers became Canadian citizens from April 1 to December 31, 2023. Compared to 222, there was an increase of 13,900 people.
Over the next two years, Canada plans on welcoming around 500,000 new permanent residents by 2026. Based on the numbers for 2023, IRCC is on track to meet its target for this year.
In 2022, the top sources for new permanent residents were from India, the Philippines, Syria, Pakistan, Nigeria, China, the US, France and Italy. Over the past year, the emigration rate from China, Afghanistan and Nigeria has increased.
