Canadian PM Justin Trudeau dials PM Modi for help, requests Covid-19 vaccine

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who had earlier raised his voice in favor of the farmers’ protests against the three agricultural laws, has now called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to request for supply of Covid-19 vaccines.

“Was happy to receive a call from my friend @JustinTrudeau. Assured him that India would do its best to facilitate the supply of Covid-19 vaccines sought by Canada. We also agreed to continue collaborating on other important issues like Climate change and the global economic recovery,” PM Modi tweeted on Wednesday.

Canada has requested a total of 1 million Covid-19 vaccines from the Serum Institute of India (SII). The deal is going to be a commercial purchase. Therefore, the government needs to grant an export clearance which will be done keeping domestic considerations in mind.

Canadian PM Justin Trudeau has been in the news since he came in favor of the farmers’ protests in India in December getting a sharp response from the Indian government. Moreover, the Canadian government earlier refused to pay attention to the requests made by India against Khalistani elements in the country.

Canadian PM Trudeau is facing internal pressure because of the insufficient covid-19 vaccines available in the country. The country is also facing strong criticism because of requesting Covid-19 vaccines from the COVAX pool which is mainly for low-income countries.

By late 2020, Canada has acquired enough vaccines for the citizens of its country to provide each one of them with 4 doses each. However, the process of acquiring  Modena and Pfizer vaccines has been really slow which has affected the situation of the country.
