    Satellite images obtained on May 27 reveal that China’s has stationed its latest J-20 stealth fighter jets within 150 kilometers of the border with India in Sikkim. All Source Analysis, a company specializing in Geospatial Intelligence through satellite imagery, has authorized the sharing of this image.

    Chinese J-20 Stealth Fighters Spotted in Tibet

    The image shows six Chinese Air Force J-20 stealth fighters positioned on the flight line at a dual-use military and civilian airport serving Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city. Situated at an altitude of 12,408 feet, this airport ranks among the highest globally. Additionally, a KJ-500 Airborne Early Warning and Control Aircraft can be seen.

    IAF Aware of J-20 Deployment; India Bolsters Defense with Rafales

    The Indian Air Force (IAF) is aware of the J-20 fighters’ deployment but has chosen not to comment on their presence at this time. The VP for Technology and Analysis at All Source Analysis note that the J-20 stealth fighter, China’s most advanced operational aircraft to date, is primarily stationd in the eastern provinces of China. He stated, “The appearance of these aircraft at Shigatse in Tibet indicates a deployment beyond their usual operational zones and places them near the Indian border.”

    India counters the J-20 with its fleet of 36 French-built Rafale fighters, with eight currently in Alaska for advanced air combat exercises with the United States Air Force (USAF).Notably, Shigatse, where observers have spotted the Chinese J-20s, lies less than 290 km from Hasimara in West Bengal, where India stations its second squadron of 16 Rafales.

    Indian Airbases Strengthened and S-400 Deployed to Counter China’s Expansion

    India matches this Chinese airfield expansion by significantly upgrading its own airbases with hardened shelters for its aircraft in addition to expanding its tiered surface-to-air missile defences, which has included the deployment of the Russian-built S-400 long-range surface-to-air missile system in eastern India. The S-400 system, reportdly capable of tracking stealth platforms, is deployd to deter offensive Chinese fighter sweeps along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
