IGI Airport Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport went haywire on Monday, as 462 departing flights faced delays. This accounts for nearly 70% of the total departures, leaving thousands of passengers stranded or delayed for hours. Unfavorable weather conditions and ongoing repair work on one of the airport’s major runways mainly caused the chaos.

Departures faced major disruptions, and airlines also delayed around 50% of incoming flights, according to data from the flight tracking website Flightradar24. The situation led to overcrowding at terminals, long waiting hours, and major inconvenience to both domestic and international travelers.

Delhi Airport issued three advisories throughout the day, warning passengers of the ongoing situation. One of the updates, posted on X (formerly Twitter), said: “Due to shifting wind patterns in the vicinity of the airport, certain airline operations may experience delays.” The airport urged travelers to stay updated with their airlines and plan their commute accordingly.

The combination of changing wind patterns, ongoing maintenance work, and dense air traffic created the perfect storm for delays. IGI Airport, being one of the busiest in India, struggled to manage the backlog and flow of passengers efficiently.

Passengers are advised to stay in touch with their airlines, check flight status frequently, and arrive at the airport well in advance to avoid further inconvenience. With weather conditions expected to remain unpredictable for a few more days, authorities are working to restore normal operations as quickly as possible.
